Maafaru airport completes runway expansion, welcomes wide-body jets
The expansion of the runway at N. Maafaru International Airport has been completed, with a wide-body aircraft landing at the airport on Tuesday to mark the milestone.
As part of the second phase of the Maafaru Airport Development Project, the runway was extended by 650 metres, increasing its total length to 2,850 metres. This upgrade enables the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
A Maldivian Airlines Airbus A330 landed at the airport on Tuesday to mark the completion of the development phase.
The Maafaru Airport project is funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The first phase received $49 million in funding, while the second phase was supported by an additional $27 million from ADFD.
The airport was originally designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. An Emirates Boeing 777 previously landed at the airport for certification purposes during the runway expansion process.
Maafaru Airport, located near a number of resorts, is known for handling a significant number of private jet arrivals outside the capital region.
Island Aviation, which operates the airport, is also working on expanding and upgrading the passenger terminal.
