Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts champions eco-initiatives across Maldives

Across the idyllic atolls of the Maldives, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts is actively bringing sustainability to life through impactful initiatives that extend well beyond intention. From the coral reefs below the surface to the tree-lined pathways of the island communities, each resort is translating its purpose into tangible action. Over the course of a week, a shared dedication to environmental and social responsibility united colleagues and guests in a series of meaningful experiences, underscoring the group’s deepening commitment to environmental sustainability.

At Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives, sustainability efforts were implemented both above and below the waterline. A coral garden, located between the Water Bungalows and the Reception, served as a focal point for marine regeneration, where guests and staff collaboratively attached live coral fragments to specially designed iron frames. The resort also extended its environmental efforts to land with a plastic clean-up initiative on Muli Island and a beach cleanup on the nearby sandbank island, reinforcing its commitment to reducing ecological impact and supporting local communities.

Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives organised a full day of awareness and environmental action. The day began with a coral replanting session, where guests joined resort staff in learning about the delicate balance of underwater ecosystems and the importance of responsible interactions. This was followed by a tree planting programme that added new greenery to the island, contributing to long-term climate resilience and biodiversity. A sustainability awareness session later in the day invited guests to delve into broader environmental challenges facing island habitats.

At Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives, the focus turned to reforestation and community partnership. Supporting the nationwide ‘5 Million Trees Project,’ the resort planted over 50 new trees across the island with contributions from staff and guests. A beach cleanup on nearby Keyodhoo Island further demonstrated the resort’s dedication to reducing pollution and promoting biodiversity in the surrounding region.

Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon continued these efforts with a dual focus on coral propagation and land restoration. The resort planted 35 fruit-bearing plants across the island and hosted interactive educational sessions led by the in-house marine biologist. These sessions highlighted the vulnerability of coral ecosystems, the effects of climate change, and the role of responsible tourism in ocean conservation.

For Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts Maldives, sustainability is a collective journey. Whether through planting corals beneath the waves, cleaning shorelines, or engaging in educational discussions about marine ecosystems, every action taken contributes to a greater purpose. The group continues to foster a travel experience that gives back to the islands, the oceans, and the communities that make the Maldives extraordinary.
